What is a Temperature Uniformity Survey?
A Temperature Uniformity Survey (TUS) is a systematic process of placing multiple calibrated temperature sensors throughout a chamber's working volume to measure and document temperature consistency across the entire load. Rather than verifying accuracy at a single control point, a TUS captures the real temperature distribution that product actually experiences—whether in a heat treat furnace, industrial oven, cold storage freezer, or refrigerated chamber—identifying any variation between the warmest and coolest zones within the equipment.
During a survey, technicians position sensors according to the required grid pattern and chamber size, then monitor and record temperature readings across all locations as the equipment stabilizes at the specified setpoint. This data is compiled into a comprehensive report showing the temperature at each test location, the spread between the highest and lowest readings, and whether the equipment falls within the required uniformity classification. For heat treat applications, results often support compliance with SAE AMS 2750 (Pyrometry) and AIAG CQI-9 (Heat Treat System Assessment). Surveys are typically supported by System Accuracy Tests, along with calibration of the associated temperature controllers, control sensors, and temperature recorders that make up the complete thermal control system.
